The Katy Masonic Lodge has awarded its Community Builder Award to Glenn Beckendorff.

Beckendorff served both as a Waller County judge and commissioner. He was an original member of the Waller County Veterans Memorial Committee to design, raise funds and construct a memorial on the courtyard.

He has served on the Brookshire Drying Company board of directors and the Brookshire-Katy Drainage District board of supervisors. He also served as president of the drainage district.

He has also served on both the board of directors, and committees of, the Houston-Galveston Area Council. The council is an association of local governments in 13 Southeast Texas counties. The council is a regional planning commission that helps local governments serve public needs while helping plan to meet future challenges.

One of those challenges is regional transportation. Beckendorff has been cited for working with the county engineer, Port of Freeport, the Texas Department of Transportation, county judges and commissioners in Brazoria and Fort Bend counties to develop a master plan and association for Highway 36A.

He also has a long involvement with the Future Farmers of America. Beckendorff served on the Area III Vocational Agricultural Teachers Board of Directors and was also its president. He started the first organized FFA Moms Club to handle catalog ad sales, fruit sales, potted mums for aged and shut ins at Christmas and concession stands.

Beckendorff is a founding member of the Area III FFA Agriculture Mechanics Contest, which today is part of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. He also served on the committee to start the District II Livestock Judging Contest. Today, Beckendorff is an honorary member of several FFA chapters and the Texas FFA.

Beckendorff is also known for his auctioneering skills. He attended Walter Britten Auction Academy in 1978 and has sold livestock and antiques in 14 states.

Beckendorff is a 1968 Katy High School graduate. Later, he served on the Katy Independent School Board of Trustees, the fourth generation of his family to do so.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Sam Houston State University. Beckendorff taught agriculture for six years, the last four in the Katy Independent School District. Among his honors, he received the Outstanding Young Vocational Agriculture Teacher in Texas award.
