Dallas Glass was ready for an opportunity.
The senior waited patiently, knowing he can make an impact on games. Usually a change of pace behind Seth Davis, Glass had already proved himself, rushing for nearly 1300 yards as a junior and having big moments even in the playoffs.
But Glass was finally able to show what he was fully capable of on Thursday, stepping in for an injured Davis and rushing for a career high 193 yards and tying a career high with four touchdown runs. His performance helped propel Katy (6-0, 4-0) to a dominant win in one of its most important games of the year thus far, beating Jordan (3-2, 2-1), the last remaining unbeaten team in District 19-6A play, 70-21 and staying perfect on the season.
“Through the whole week of I knew that I’d need to step up and help the team,” Glass said. “I just took my preparation seriously and coach told me exactly what I needed to do. I just had to do my best and I knew that would be enough, I knew I’d have a big role coming into this game and I didn’t want there to be any drop off when I came in, so I focused, locked in and just followed my line.”
Glass made his impact felt straight away, as he took the Tigers third play from scrimmage and turned it into a 51-yard touchdown run to give Katy a lead it would never relinquish.
Katy immediately turned the game from a one possession lead to a two possession lead, as Jordan fumbled on the kickoff and the Tigers recovered, with Caleb Koger throwing a 12-yard touchdown to Adam Jackson on the next play. Micah Koenig then returned a punt 75-yards for another score and Glass added a 47-yard touchdown run as Katy took a commanding lead in the first quarter.
Glass would run for two more touchdowns in the second quarter and get up to 193 yards rushing, as the Tigers were able to go to backup running backs in the second half and allow Glass to rest.
“We knew Glass could compete, we had seen that out of him last year, he’s been a very good player,” said Katy head coach Gary Joseph. “But it was good to see him step in and be the man. That’s what we had to establish and what he had to show. He had been banged up earlier in the year and just to see him come back the way he has and play like this, it’s going to help us down the road and keep us fresh the rest of the way at running back.”
Glass wasn’t the only one who stepped up for the Tigers in the game either. Following halftime, Micah Koenig scored his second special teams touchdown of the day, taking the opening kickoff of the second half 97-yards for a score, as he has continued to make an impact and help the team since J.R. Ceyanes went down with an injury during the first week of district.
“He’s been big for us,” Joseph said. “We lost J.R. (Ceyanes) and he was our go to receiver, we had to have somebody step up. Micah has really done that and I’m glad. He’s making an impact offensively and in the return game and I think it gives our guys on special teams a lot of confidence when they’re blocking for him. They did a great job blocking and it was awesome to see them contribute to the win.”
In total, Katy rushed for 311 yards on the night and showcased an improving offensive line while the Tigers defense continued to look strong, limiting a very strong Jordan team to just over 200 yards offense.
“We’re still missing a couple of people on the offensive line, but we’ve had guys come in and do a really good job. They’re just going to continue to get better,” Joseph said. “Just like with the other stuff it will help us depth wise and I’m proud of them. All of our line did a good job. Really all three phases we did well, and we hit on all cylinders in that first half.”
Katy will take on Paetow next before getting to a much-needed bye week where the Tigers can recuperate. But the team isn’t thinking ahead, they’re focused on the here and now and winning every day.
“Coach always tells us to just do our best and control what we can control,” Koenig said. “That’s what we’re focused on is getting better every day, controlling what we can control and preparing for every opponent, and that’s exactly what we’ll do once we get back in the film room tomorrow.”
