Make it a handful.

Katy High’s boys wrestling team won its fifth consecutive regional championship on Saturday, Feb. 15, besting second-place Seven Lakes by almost 100 points at the Region III-6A tournament at the Merrell Center.

“I don’t know that it’s sunk in,” coach Vinnie Lowe said. “I’ve been blessed these last five, seven years with kids that really buy in. They work hard and they set high expectations for themselves. The kids, the families, the coaching staff. It just all seems to be coming together at the right time.”

The Tiger boys scored 221 points. Terrific by any measure, but a wee bit short of the 225-point standard they had set for themselves.

“Our guys went in with a specific goal as a team, and they came pretty darn close point-wise,” Lowe said. “We stumbled a bit in the medal rounds, but those are tough matches.”

Senior Kishawn Higgins, and juniors Luke Holland and Truman Timmons won individual regional titles.

Higgins, a defending state champion, improved to 50-1 in his 170-pound weight class.

“He’s a heck of an athlete,” Lowe said. “It’s amazing to watch what he can do when he gets out there on the mat. It’s almost like he surprises me every time. He can still work on picking up the pace and staying after kids. We push trying to work hard throughout a match, keep the pace up and keep the scoring and aggression up. You’re trying to make conditioning be a factor for your opponent as well.”

Other Katy ISD boys individual regional champions were Taylor senior Curshawn Wilkins, Seven Lakes junior Joe Racicot and Tompkins junior Harris Masson.

The Spartans boys finished second with 121.5 points, followed by Cypress Woods and Cinco Ranch tying for third with 113 points apiece.

On the girls’ side, Tompkins continued its upstart program-best season to win the regional girls team championship. The Falcons scored 140 points and qualified five of 10 weight classes to state.

“I was proud of our consistency over the last week of not letting the happiness or excitement of the district title derail us from what we were able to do this weekend,” Tompkins coach Derek Ankney said. “They’re starting to see how dangerous of a team they can be when they are focused. I don’t know if they realized at the start of the season just how strong they could be, but they have definitely come to see that now.”

Tompkins juniors Nicole Blinn, Kaitlyn Bryant and Lilly Broadrick won individual regional titles. They have a combined record of 107-8.

“Their dedication to the craft is something,” Ankney said of his star junior trio. “The amount of time they put in outside of the season … it’s just been amazing. They grind, they work hard, and they’re seeing some of the fruits of their labor. I can’t say enough good things about the junior class in general.”

Other Katy ISD girls individual regional champions were Morton Ranch senior Jordan Suarez, Mayde Creek senior Illyauna Martinez, Morton Ranch sophomore Natalie Vasquez and Cinco Ranch junior Isabella Walsh.

Morton Ranch’s girls finished in second with 127 points, followed by Cypress Park in third with 86.5, Seven Lakes in fourth with 78 and Mayde Creek in fifth with 59.

Katy’s boys and Tompkins’ girls each won their respective District 9-6A championships the previous week, making it a clean sweep of the postseason so far for them.

At the Region III-5A championships on Feb. 15 in Pflugerville, Paetow’s girls team finished eighth with a score of 61 points. The Panther boys finished 13th with a score of 59.

Still, Paetow is sending four representatives to the state tournament.

Junior Josiah Bernhardt qualified for state, finishing second in his 152 class. Bernhardt fell to Lucas Lovejoy’s Alex Vislosky in the first-place match and is 33-5 this season.

Junior John Abney is also going to state. He placed fourth in his 126 class and improved to 24-9. Junior Jeremiah Marquez also qualified for state by placing fourth in his 195 class. He is 23-8 this season

Panthers junior Brittney Galindo qualified for state in her 102 class by finishing third and is the first Panther girls wrestler to make it to state. She topped Carrollton Creekview’s Avery Campbell in the third-place match via 8-7 decision. Galindo is 32-6 this season.

In all, Katy ISD will send 31 boys and 20 girls to the state tournament that will be held Feb. 21-22 at the Berry Center in Cypress.
