Jordan wanted to come out and make a statement in its season opener.

The Warriors are making the jump from being unclassified all the way to Class 6A, and they have their first real varsity schedule ever, they wanted to prove a point to the rest of Katy and the rest of the area that they aren’t someone teams can just roll over this season.

Well, it’s fair to say that point was made on Saturday night.

Jordan came out and scored 49 first half points en route to  a 64-14 shellacking of Aldine Davis in the Warriors season opener at  Rhodes Stadium, as the Warriors came out dominated on both sides of the ball from the start of the game, and showed exactly what they were out to prove to start the season.

“That was out goal this week,” said sophomore wide receiver Andrew Marsh. “We wanted to come out here and show people what we can do and prove to everyone that we can play. We want everyone to know that we’re coming and we aren’t scared of anybody.”

Marsh was part of a huge offensive performance for Jordan, but the biggest day came from Zechariah Sample, who made a huge statement on both sides of the ball, with huge plays and touchdowns both on offense and defense.

Sample totaled four touchdowns on the night, three on offense and one on defense, while also making two interceptions and playing lockdown corner.

And it was Sample who started off the scoring two minutes into the game, taking a jet sweep and scampering in for a 3-yard score.

Then on a botched play where Aldine Davis’ quarterback Josh Williams had a ball snapped over his head into the endzone, Williams tried to sling the ball out of the endzone and it went right to Sample, who walked in for his second score of the game.

Jordan then was put in bad field position, starting on its own ten the next drive, but Sample was on a mission, he took the first play from scrimmage and turned it into a 90-yard touchdown run to give Jordan a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

Sample had an insane stat line on the night, finishing with 116 yards rushing on just six carries to go with eight receiving yards and his two interceptions, including his pick-6.

“Zechariah is very unique as a talent,” said Jordan head coach Mike Rabe. “He does it on both sides of the ball and he does it in special teams. He’s really just a good kid, he’s fun to have in the field house, he brings energy to practice every day, he’s a good one and he’s fun to watch.”

Jordan ended the first quarter up 28 to zero and stretched that lead even further in the second, scoring three more touchdowns to go into the half with a 42-7 lead.

Marsh caught two of those touchdowns in the second quarter, with one of them being an outstanding back shoulder fade where he and junior quarterback Colin Willetts were perfectly in line with what both wanted to do.

That dominance was on display all game from the duo, as Marsh ended the night with five receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns while Willetts threw for 171 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

“I knew coming in that I would be able to get past their secondary and get open,” Marsh said. “The offensive line did a great job of holding up protection for those deep plays and Colin was great, he kept putting the ball right where it needed to be, it was a really fun game.”

As good as the offense was for Jordan though, it was the defense that stood out the most. The Warriors held Aldine Davis to under 200 yards for the entire game and forced seven turnovers, as they never gave the Falcons room to breathe and continued to give the ball back to their offense in good positions.

“I don’t even know how we were able to get so many turnovers,” Sample said. “It’s just the chemistry we have back there. We’ve been working on it and we know each other and play together. It all came together tonight.”

The Warriors know that they can’t sit on the victory too long though, as they prepare to take on Kingwood next week, and the Warriors, like always are looking for ways to improve their young team.

“It’s a really good win and it’s great to start the season like this,” Rabe said. “But they still have to have the mindset of showing up and getting better every day. This is good for a night and then next week we have Kingwood. So getting refocused is a really big thing for us because we haven’t had a victory like this before, now they have to learn how to flip a switch to next week, that will be huge.”
