In its first district contest – and only third regular-season game – the Royal Falcons fell to the Sealy Tigers, 43-8, last Friday night at Brookshire’s Falcon Stadium. It was the first action within District 12-4A-D2 where Bellville, La Marque and Sealy all started with wins and Sweeny and Wharton joined Royal in the loss column.

The visitors kept the Falcons on their own side of the midfield until their final drive where Royal crossed the 50-yard line with 6:45 remaining in the game. The drive ended with the hosts’ lone score, a 14-yard pass from senior quarterback Andre Prophet to sophomore running back Derrick Gates which was followed by a two-point conversion through the air from Prophet to senior tight end Jeremiah Venson.

The Royal offense totaled 127 yards where 84 of them came on the ground. Gates led with 46 yards on nine carries, senior Matthew Green had 40 yards on 15 carries but senior Elbert Adams finished with 1 yard rushing on six carries and the quarterback Prophet registered -3 yards rushing on seven carries.

Prophet contributed the rest of the 43 yards through the air on 5-of-7 passing. He connected with Gates twice for 20 yards, Venson caught one pass for 20 yards that set up the score and Cedric Smith caught two passes for four yards.

Senior Fred Hardy led the Falcons’ defensive unit with four total tackles, junior classmates Greg Harris and Anthony Ball contributed three tackles apiece while a host of Royal defenders tallied a pair of tackles, including junior Gavin Lennox, freshman Zechariah Robinson, Venson, Green and Adams.

The Falcons, 1-2 overall, move on to another home game this Friday against the La Marque Cougars who enter 1-4 overall on the season, scoring 15.2 points per game and allowing 25.6 points per game. Royal owns a point-per-game average of 10.3 while allowing 30 points per game to opponents.

The three winners lead the points-for category in district play, although Sweeny and Wharton both scored over 100 points in non-district play and leads La Marque’s 76 points over five games. Overall, Bellville (242) is the only team above 200 points for, with Sealy (158), Sweeny (142) and Wharton (107) all over the century mark. Royal has scored 31 points in its three games so far.

Defensively, Sealy has allowed the fewest points with 88 over five games and Royal is the only other team under 100 with 90 points allowed in three games. Bellville has allowed 122 points in five wins and La Marque has given up 128 points after earning its first win of the season last week. Sweeny (218) and Wharton (291) have both yielded more than 200 points in six games each.

In other action around the district this week, Bellville and Sealy – the only two teams above .500 overall at 5-0 and 3-2 – will clash at T.J. Mills Stadium in Sealy and Sweeny (1-5 overall) will travel to Wharton (0-6 overall).
