Katy ISD officials are investigating a heckling incident at a Sept. 2 Paetow-Jordan volleyball match at Jordan High School.
Lekeesha Kemp-Adams, who is a parent of a Paetow volleyball player, recorded and posted a video on social media in which some fans heckled the Paetow players. Some fans can be heard in the video to be making what Adams described as monkey sounds.
Kemp-Adams said she complained to Katy ISD officials.
“My daughter’s team literally consists of Black and Hispanic players, so you can clearly understand what they were facing,” Kemp-Adams wrote. “Jordan’s volleyball team literally has one Black girl. Our girls were distraught and devastated to endure such hatred.”
Kemp-Adams said she complained to Katy ISD officials. In a letter to Paetow parents sent Sept. 5, district officials said they were aware of the incident and were investigating.
In a follow-up letter sent the next day, officials said their investigation “has identified some students engaged in behaviors that are not aligned with the district and the UIL’s expectations for sportsmanship conduct during an athletic event.”
The district said any student behavior that violates its Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct would face disciplinary consequences.
“The safety of all Katy ISD students is our district’s utmost priority,” the letter said. “Students, staff and community play an important role in keeping our school safe by reporting potential safety issues.”
Officials said those with questions or information on the incident may express them by emailing kisdconcerns@katyisd.org.
