Astros clinch 3rd straight AL West title

HOUSTON — The Angels couldn’t keep the Houston Astros from celebrating this time.

The Angels gave up five homers in a 13-5 loss to the Astros on Sept. 22, allowing the Astros to clinch the American League West title that had seemed inevitable for most of the season.

George Springer hit homers in each of his first three at-bats, doing most of the early damage as the Astros avoided a second straight loss to the Angels.

The Angels trailed just 4-2 in the middle of the fifth, having managed some threats against Cy Young favorite Justin Verlander, who earned his 20th win of the season.

The 20-win campaign is Verlander’s second of his career and first since 2011 with Detroit.

The Angels went with rookies José Rodriguez and José Suarez to piggyback the first part of the game, and each pitched two innings. Rodriguez gave up three runs and Suarez allowed one.

In the bottom of the fifth, left-hander Miguel Del Pozo took the mound, and that’s when Houston struck fire.

Del Pozo gave up a single to Michael Brantley and a homer to Alex Bregman. Yordan Álvarez then doubled. Justin Anderson entered and allowed the first four hitters to reach, including two walks.

The Astros scored six runs in the inning.

They captured their third straight division title and the ninth division title in franchise history.

Suffering a plethora of injuries to their infielders during the first half, the Astros thoroughly dominated division they were unanimous preseason favorites to win as they are the first team to win 100 games this season.

Their win against the Angels on Sunday was the 32nd in 38 American League West games inside Minute Maid Park. Houston holds a 51-19 record against its four divisional foes with six games remaining as of Sunday.

They went unbeaten against the Rangers in nine games at Minute Maid Park. With two games left to play in Seattle as of Sunday, Houston holds a 16-1 season record against the moribund Mariners. Only the Oakland Athletics offered any resistance, winning eight of the teams’ 21 meetings.

After Zack Greinke salvaged the final game of the series on Aug. 18 to augment the lead to seven, Houston’s division lead never got narrower than 6 1/2 games the rest of the way.
