Caroll Ann Hodo, age 72 of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 26, 2019, surrounded by her husband, both daughters, and other family members. She was born on March 26, 1947, in New York, NY, to Charles and Maria Purdy. At the age of two, her family moved to Houston, and she lived in Southwest Houston and in the Katy area the rest of her life.
She earned her bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Houston. She was a teacher who absolutely loved her job and loved her students, always going above and beyond to be a teacher of excellence. She taught at Second Baptist School for many years and then taught at West Memorial Elementary in Katy, TX. She met her “hubby” Larry Hodo while working for Katy ISD, where she was a 5th grade teacher and he was the 6th grade counselor at the adjacent junior high school. She concluded the last part of her teaching career in adult education, teaching GED classes and ESL classes in the Windham School District and in the Harris County Department of Education Adult Education programs. For the school year 2012-2013, she was recognized as Teacher of the Year for Adult Education for all of Harris County; and then shortly thereafter, she was honored with the same title for the entire state of Texas. She was loved by her students and inspired many of them to become educators themselves. She always saw the potential and looked for the good in every person and in every situation.
Caroll’s friends and family all testify that she was one of the most loving, kind, and giving people they have ever known. She exemplified what it means to live a life of always thinking of others first and caring deeply for others. She was a vessel that poured out the love of Christ. She will also be remembered for her love of gardening, as her favorite hobby involved spending hours planting and tending to her beautiful southern garden. She also was a master of baked goods. She loved baking fresh bread and then presenting the delicious loafs as gifts to friends and co-workers.
Caroll was preceded in death by her father and mother, and by her niece, Celine Donohue. Caroll is survived by her husband, Larry Hodo; her daughter and son-in-law Sherry and Corbin Pevey; her daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Chris Smart, her step-daughter Christi Halsey, and her five granddaughters: Meghan Pevey, Madeleine Pevey, Kennedy Smart, Kayla Smart, and Justice Halsey. She is also survived by her sister Cindy Sidell; her sister and brother-in-law Eileen and Joe Donohue; her nephew Casey Donohue; her niece Susan Sidell (and her adult children Erika, Camille, and Alex) and niece Cindi Schuler (and her adult children Brice and Tyler).
