Area resident protests tax increase

An area resident spoke at the City of Katy public hearing Monday night, voicing his concerns for the proposed tax increase.

“It seems to me this city is one of the most overburdened and overtaxed cities in the whole area,” said Tony Cantu, who has lived in the area for a year.

“I don’t see any ideas on how they’re planning to cut the city budget.”

Cantu suggested that the city provide ideas to attract more businesses or work with the county to decrease taxes.

“The stock market is crashing,” Cantu said. “The appraisal district increased my house value when actually it went down. Nobody’s being able to sell their houses.

"If we continue like this and increasing taxes and don’t have any ideas to bring more business space, we’re going to be crashing, too.”

The council later determined Cantu lived outside the city limits but said his points were “well taken.”

The second public hearing is schedule for Thursday, Oct. 2 at 6:30 p.m. at the Katy Municipal Complex, 910 Ave. C. The council will adopt the tax rate Monday, Oct. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

" "the council later determined Cantu lived outside the city limits"...hahaha that made my day. Thanks, good article. "

" If the value of your home was increased, when you know the market is down, then you should be able to dispute the value of your home with the appraisal district.
I understand Tony Cantu's concern, and in many ways he is right. We Americans of the middle class are the people who sustain our countrys economy, with the price of everything going up up up, it's no wonder that so many don't have the money buy buy buy. "

" I am of no relation to Mr. Tony Cantu. Though, I do live within the Katy city limits. "

" Hopefully, he knows he can protest the value at the apprasial district. I have done this the last three years (successful twice). "
